Description
The 2007 vintage in Margaret River is proving itself to be excellent, in particular for the outstanding Cabernets coming from the region.
Cape Mentelle has a rich history of exceptional quality and consistency with Cabernet Sauvignon from a pioneering producer in Margaret River in the early 1970's to a benchmark producer today.
The style has evolved over time with the aim always to define a wine displaying classic varietal character and opulence, strong regional identity and with the structure and fruit intensity to improve with extended cellaring.
Nick Stock, Sydney Morning Herald Good Wine Guide 2011 gives it 97 points and says....
Another 2007 from Margaret River that will be remembered as one of the greatest Cape Mentelle Cabernets of all time. Power and poise fused with conviction and stunning value when you look around the globe at comparative Cabernet quality. A much anticipated vintage of this leading Margaret River Cabernet, and not an ounce of disappointment. With smells of bright cassis and juniper, fragrant and subtly floral, the cedary spicy oak adds a layer of class to the standout wine. The palate's unthinkably poised: perfectly proportioned and tannins carry deeply ripe, sweet fruit with impressive power and impeccable grace. Like an angel, this sits right at the top of the tree.
Voted Best Cabernet Sauvignon in the Sydney Morning Herald Good Wine Guide 2011

I wonder whether David Hohnen imagined the class and polish of today's wines when he founded Cape Mentelle in 1970. Hohnen is now involved in McHenry Hohnen, but Moet Hennessy Australia, keep Cape Mentelle atop Australia's Cabernet pinnacle. The 2007 is built on fine, concentrated, ripe varietal flavours, interwoven with sweet, cedary oak and firm but silk-smooth tannins. Winemaker Robert Mann says the fruits are from three blocks planted on the Walcliffe vineyard in 1970 and a parcel from 35-year-old vines at Wilyabrup.

This is one of the better Cape Mentelle Cabernet releases. Beautiful texture and tannin. Good weight of dark fruit flavour too. Lots of fragrance. Mint, vanilla, blackberries and bracken. Some smokey oak too. Has a bit of x-factor. Long, fine, structured finish.
